A substantial double sided sunburst, carved to both sides with the heads of putti and long necked swans. Retaining the original water gilding and substantial traces of the original polychrome on the putti. It is likely to be the remaining top section of a larger piece, possibly from a catholic shrine of some kind. The inner contours, forming a strong impression of a head and shoulders, suggest it once surrounded a figure, a life size carved saint or Jesus.
Dating to at least 18th century, condition is overall excellent. With signs of age and wear to the gilding and no shortage of patina to the beautiful painted putti. It came to us with a couple of the sun rays snapped and has now been beautifully restored by a master gilder/carver. There is no loose or flaking gold and the whole is solid and stable.
