A very rare, and very pretty matching pair of Korean folk paintings. 95cm x 47cm (37 x 18.5 inch) each.
Known as Minhwa, these paintings were produced mostly by itinerant, unknown artists without formal training. This pair fall into the category of Hwajodo: Paintings of Birds and Flowers.
Much of the original paint has faded or gone, with only the stronger mineral pigments (probably malachite and lapis lazuli) remaining vibrant. The palette has mellowed and muted now giving them an elegant, refined feel very different to when they were first produced. They have certainly got a lot of age to them, we would guess 18th century to early 19th.
As a matching pair, by the same artist, they may originally have been part of a larger screen. They have since been magnificently reframed by the Kato Gallery, Tokyo (label to verso) for the Platt Collection (also labelled to back). The frames, circa 1970's, are superbly well made and perfectly matched to the paintings. Finished in distressed gold leaf over a black ground, with a beautiful olive green silk mount and in superb condition ready to hang.

To keep costs down, we use multi drop couriers who may only be in your area on a specific day. It is a one man, doorstep delivery.
