Beautiful and rare, these Indian Cobra Candlesticks have been made with an unusual bronze and bidri technique we haven't seen before.
The Bidri (black base metal) has been almost entirely covered with a bronze layer that has had the decoration cut out of it to reveal the black beneath. (Normal bidri technique is to cut the pattern into the bidri, then inlay with the more expensive metal, usually silver.) The two metals haven't been polished level as with the inlay technique but the bronze is raised and pronounced.
Overall excellent condition, the drip pans have malformed over the years and one sits loose (this can be stabilized with a simple washer but doesn't really need it). In some small places the bronze has worn through to reveal the bidri base, which should give some idea how old these are.
