A very striking, exceptional example.
Dating to the early part of the twentieth century and in superb condition. It is woven using wool for both the warp and weft threads which dates this prior to the 1930's when cotton began to be used for the warp.
The wool has aged wonderfully, giving this a huge array of colours (this is known as "Abrash" and is the result of different batches of dyed wool ageing and changing at different rates as the rug ages. You just can't get this on a new rug). There are no losses or damage to mention, minor signs of ageing/wear in places but you do need to look hard, this in excellent condition and at least 90 years old.
Sofreh are small tribal rugs used for serving food in the tent. This one is typical in both size and design, being 4ft square. It is a flat weave kilim and very hard wearing and durable.
