Very unusual folk art caddy, we can't find anything else in the same style.
It has been turned from a single piece of soft wood, most likely Linden, and stained to achieve a beautiful dark mottled colour akin to Coramandel. The image has been picked out with a burning tool prior to being painted then bordered with another burning tool, in little seed shapes, which gives the caddy a look of stitched leather. The top has been beautifully hand carved with a floral motif, the petals are painted a very dark green and it has a simple friction fit lid.
Various people have suggested this is Swedish, Eastern European and even Greek. The pokerwork technique has been used in Sweden, the circular design and the image is reminiscent of Russian folk art boxes and we have seen similar carving on Polish objects but nothing seems to quite fit, it's origins remain unknown.
Condition overall is superb, there is a chip to the top of the lid handle, see images, other than that it is perfect, totally unmarked and undamaged. Very rare to find antique painted wood in such original undamaged condition. Size is 16cm high to top of the lid, and 10.5cm in width
